The Dark Side by Guy de Maupassant Overview

This is one of the better introductions to Maupassant’s darker works. While Maupassant’s work spans a variety of genres, his tales of horror, insanity, pessimism, and the occult are among his best. This is an excellent book for individuals who want to avoid Maupassant’s lighthearted tales of infidelity, boating scenes, and bourgeois pleasures in favour of his bleak and gruesome tales. “Tales of dread and the supernatural” is a misleading subtitle. Only a few stories mention ghosts or allude to the presence of supernatural beings. Man’s inner demons, paranoias, cruelties, and obsessions are the true terrors here. The majority of these stories follow in the footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe’s psychological horror, melancholy and ominous settings, and psychologically deteriorating individuals. Maupassant’s pessimism and economy of language (the majority of his stories are under 5 pages) are added to this.

The stories of Guy de Maupassant are built on a fear of the unknown. There are no physical monsters here; only mental ones. Fearful owners let their dogs out, then shoot them in the face when they return their gaze to the window, believing it to be a monster. The enigma of fear is explored, as well as how man scares himself. Maupassant was a student of Gustav Flaubert, a French naturalist, and writes objectively, scientifically about man’s reaction to his surroundings.
